The German tech-tree tier X heavy cruiser, whose strengths are a sturdy hull and accurate 203 mm AP. Patch 9.4 raised AP damage from 840 to 880 and cut the reload from 10 to 9 s, so its AP salvo is 33% above average and AP DPM 27% above. Fast, flat-trajectory shells let it deal consistent damage to broadside cruisers. 3 charges each of Precise Aiming System II and Sonar II make it useful for pressuring destroyers and dodging torpedoes. On the other hand, very slow 24.68 s acceleration makes evasive maneuvering hard, and with no Air Defense Alert it is an easy carrier target. Torpedo damage rose from 2,700 to 3,000 in 9.4, but their 5.4 km range still makes them more of a last resort to push back close enemies. With more rival cruisers better at holding the line or hunting destroyers, opinions before the 9.4 buffs were mixed.
