Project 47 was a design for a new series of 4,500-ton destroyers that were to be constructed for the Soviet Navy after the completion of the Kiev class. They were intended to function as destroyer leaders and were designed to be faster and more heavily armed than their predecessors. Zorkiy was intended to be a 1950s upgrade of Project 47 with a modernized main battery, electronics suite, and torpedo tube set.
