Eight S-class destroyers, ordered by the British Admiralty under the War Emergency Program, entered service in 1943 and 1944. Two ships of the series were transferred to the Royal Norwegian Navy, named Stord and Svenner. Destroyer Stord etched her name in history during the Battle of the North Cape. Norwegian torpedoes played an important role in sinking German battleship Scharnhorst. In June 1944, Stord supported the landing of troops in Normandy, after which she remained in active service for another 15 years.
