The Asashio-class was a group of 10 destroyers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy between 1937 and 1939, designed to be an improvement over the preceding Shiratsuyu-class destroyers. The Japanese government allowed the London Naval Treaty to expire, a treaty that had prevented improvements to the Shiratsuyu class due to the applicable limits. No longer needing to adhere to the treaty limitations, engineers increased the displacement and hull length of the Asashio class to improve the speed and operational range.
