Hughes
Tier VII · Destroyer · U.S.A.
Rating B+ (Above average within its tier and class · overall score 60) · Gunboat destroyer
Gunboat destroyer, suited to cap contesting. Top speed is 34.3 kn (2.3 kn below average), but 7.5 s acceleration and 2.8 s rudder shift make it exceptionally nimble at dodging shells and snapping turns. Its 7.2 km torpedoes outrange its 5.88 km detectability by 1.3 km, ideal for smoke-backed ambushes. Detectability of 5.88 km is 0.37 km below average, so it is less likely to be spotted first. HE-only, it grinds targets down with fires.

A destroyer of the Sims class—the final series of the so-called "1,500-ton" destroyers. USS Hughes entered service in September 1939 and spent the entirety of World War II in the Pacific Theater. The ship took part in the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. She also provided support during landings on the Gilbert, Marshall, and Palau Islands. During the Philippines Campaign, USS Hughes was struck by a kamikaze attack but returned to service. The ship was decommissioned in 1946.
