Gearing
Tier X · Destroyer · U.S.A.
Rating B- (Below average within its tier and class · overall score 40) · Stealth torpedo destroyer
A US hybrid destroyer with a balanced mix of smoke, AA and torpedoes. With 6.36 km detectability and 9.36 km torpedoes it can torpedo from stealth with a 3.0 km margin, and its 45,980 torpedo salvo is 13% above average. Top speed is a slow 35.3 kn, but a 3.06 s rudder shift and 7.29 s acceleration make it agile at dodging torpedoes, and 3 charges of Smoke Generator II help it get through tight spots. Its guns reload in 3.3 s, good for setting large ships on fire, but their high-arcing trajectories make them weak in mid-to-long-range gunfights with destroyers. Many say it no longer holds its former standing since Daring's release and the rise of cruisers.

The Gearing-class destroyers were completed shortly after World War II. Compared to the preceding Sumners, the Gearings had a larger displacement and greater range. Some of them continued in active service in the U.S. Navy until the 1970s and several served in other nations' fleets.
